Artist Statement - Items for Women

The concept of the series is simple: it is a collection of images that are illustrations of products designed with women in mind. Some are cruel, some are frivolous, and some are both.

The series is as simple visually, as it is conceptually. Limiting the palette to black and white, while depicting an object graphically in outline, allows the viewer to react to the object rather than an expressed emotion of the artist. While some of the items would be universally perceived to be detrimental for women, or even barbaric, others are disdained or adored, depending on the viewer. For example, a high heeled pump is both a loved and hated object, some women may see it as a tortuous fashion item devised by men to make women vulnerable. Other women may feel sexy in heels, or feel that the added height makes them less vulnerable, and not want go a day without them.

'Items for Women' is a visual survey that allows the viewer to form her/his own opinion about the objects and their uses. This collection of women's things, sometimes intimate things, reflects something of women's roles and choices in society, in various centuries.
